Austin C. Chapel Civil War diary

This 110-page Civil War diary of Austin C. Chapel, 5th Sergeant of Company G in Wisconsin's 13th Infantry Regiment, chronicles his daily activities in 1863 while guarding Union supplies in Tennessee. Documents which accompany the diary include Chapel's notice of appointment as 5th Sergeant, a 4-page letter written by Chapel in 1862 while posted at Fort Scott, Kansas, and his photograph in uniform.

Barnabas Dorr Palmer personal papers

The papers include (1) a testimony to his recent left-handness sworn before Douglas County Clerk in 1867, (2) a manuscript titled "A sketch of my military history" which he entered in a penmanship contest, sponsored by William Oland Bourne, editor of the "Soldier's Friend", (3) a letter from General U.S. Grant awarding Palmer first prize in the contest, and (4) letter awarding Palmer a $50 prize.

Charles E. Austin letters, photograph and diary

Austin was the youngest son of A. E. Austin of Austinburg, Ohio, and served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Brigade 3rd Division, 9th Corps, Army of the Potomac. This collection consist of letters, photographs and a diary from 1855-1864.

Civil War diary of Douglas O. Lilley

This Civil War diary of Douglas O. Lilley, a private in Company D of the Kansas 8th Regiment, contains his daily entries for the entirety of 1863, describing his military duties at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, his transfer as a prisoner to Benton Barracks in Missouri, his service in Tennessee and Georgia, and his return to Kansas and resumption of civilian life following disability discharge in December 1863. Civil War memoir of Sergeant Perry O. C. Nixon

This memoir of Perry Oliver Cook Nixon, written in 1907, details his Civil War experiences as a Union soldier in Company C of the 10th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, including the battles of Nashville and Atlanta, as well as Sherman's March to the Sea. Nixon also documents his childhood and his post-war experiences as a Labette County, Kansas settler. Loose items associated with the memoir are located at RH MS P646.

Civil War surgeon collection

This collection consists of two volumes from Jon G. Miller, who served as a surgeon in the United States Union Army during the Civil War of the 1860s. One volume served as Miller's diary, while the other, an exercise book, was used to keep official record of effects of deceased soldiers by the hospital steward at the Marietta, Georgia hospital established by Miller. Loose items found in the volumes have been physically separated.

Elizabeth Murray Raymond papers

Elizabeth Raymond was a Lawrence resident whose grandfather, Joseph M. Raymond, served in the Union Army during the Civil War. This collection contains the elder Raymond's diary entries, personal records, and correspondence with Hila Bennitt, whom he would later marry. Elizabeth Raymond compiled these documents into a narrative about her grandparents' experiences during the war. Copies of that manuscript, "Ohio Volunteer: Joseph Murray Raymond Diaries" are also part of this collection.
