Edward F. Reilly, Jr., a native of Leavenworth, Kansas, served 29 years as a legislator for the state of Kansas. He served one year as a member of the House of Representatives and then 28 years in the United States Senate. These papers consist of legislative records, including material House and Senate bill development and records of the Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs regarding correctional facilities, as well as correspondence to and from Reilly.

Overview Fred A. Kerr was born December 29, 1940 in Spearville, Kansas. He is a 3rd generation farmer and stockman in Coats, Pratt County, Kansas. Kerr served in the Kansas State Senate from the 33rd district for 16 years, from 1976 to 1992. During four of these years, he served as majority (Republican) leader. The Sertoma (SERvice TO MAnkind) Club of Lawrence, a local branch of Sertoma International, was chartered in 1929; it was known as the Co-operative Club through the late 1940s. Originally a men's organization, Sertoma began to admit women in the 1980s. This collection includes administrative records and newsletters throughout the Club's history, though the bulk of the material is pertinent to the late 1960s-1990s.

S.H. Thompson family papers

Dr. S.H. Thompson, Sr. was a founder of Douglass Hospital, a facility in Kansas City, Kansas that practiced equal access and care to all patients and hired medical personnel without regard to race or ethnicity. His son, S.H. Thompson, Jr., served as principal of Sumner High School (Kansas City, Kansas) from 1951-1972. The collection includes papers and photographs of both S.H. Thompson, Jr. and Sr., as well as material from other family members.

James Boucher Shane, a Civil War veteran, settled in Lawrence, Kansas in 1878, where he began to operate a commerical photography business. His daugther, Juno Belle Shane, and her husband, Herbert Thompson, eventually took over the business, which operated until 1953. The collection includes personal records of the Shane family, as well as business records of the Shane-Thompson studio, photographic prints, and glass plate negatives.

Sidney Clarke letters

Overview

Sidney Clarke was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts on October 16, 1831. He was the editor and publisher of the Southbridge Press from 1853 to 1857. He emigrated to Kansas in 1858 and settled at Shawnee. He became a member of the state legislature in 1862 and was a United States Representative at Large, 1865-1871. The collection includes three letters to Charles Lanman, editor of Dictionary of the U.S. Congress (1858), and a portrait of Clarke at RH MS-P P226.

Signal Oak photograph

This collection consists of a single photograph of the "Signal Oak," a tree north of Baldwin, Kansas on the Barricklaw farm used to hang signal lanterns in times of danger in the Big Hill and Blue Mound areas during the Border Wars between Kansas and Missouri. S.C. Barricklaw is also featured in the photograph, and there is a news clipping associated with the image.
