Austin C. Chapel Civil War diary

This 110-page Civil War diary of Austin C. Chapel, 5th Sergeant of Company G in Wisconsin's 13th Infantry Regiment, chronicles his daily activities in 1863 while guarding Union supplies in Tennessee. Documents which accompany the diary include Chapel's notice of appointment as 5th Sergeant, a 4-page letter written by Chapel in 1862 while posted at Fort Scott, Kansas, and his photograph in uniform.

Autobiography by George, a sailor from Lincolnshire, England. Topics include the Workhouse; being a farmer's boy and runaway; serving as a Trent and Humber sailor; working in coatwise and London shipping. Crew on convict ship bound for Botany Bay, 1797; mutiny by French prisoners; imprisoned in Argentina (Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Montevideo, etc.) Convert to Catholicism; escaped to the United States, 1802; returned to England. Became a Baptist; religious meditations, verse, and vision.

This handwritten reminiscence describes a Lincoln-Douglas debate in Jonesboro, Illinois in late summer 1858. Also included in the reminiscence is the author's personal meeting with both Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Douglas while working as a brakeman for the Illinois Central Railway in 1858 and 1859.

Balance books from a London trader

Account books of an anonymous speculative trader, providing yearly summary of accounts. Each volume covers a year, and contains a dozen accounts in fair detail and a list of 50 to 100 accounts showing net profit or debit. The "bottom line" is about £50,000. Cargoes largely consist of tropical produce; the trader also imported cheese and butter from Holland into England and had other investments.
