"A groan from the lobby of the Old Bailey"

The verse, "A groan from the lobby of the Old Bailey", tells of the difficulty of dealing with the crowds and being allowed to enter the courtroom at the Old Bailey in London, England. Penciled notes on the leaf attribute the verse to Captain William Dawes Malton (flourished 1856-1884) and ascribe the occasion as the trial of Palmer. Malton, a military man and author, probably wrote this verse on the occasion of the trial of Samuel Palmer in May 1856.

Chart of "Line of Batle [sic]" with instructions for communication by signals, sent by Vice-Admiral Sir Stafford Fairborne, commanding twelve Royal Navy ships in the North Atlantic off Kingsale, Ireland, to Captain Miles [i.e. Josian Mighells] in preparation for British battle with French ships during the Spanish War of Succession. Written aboard the HMS Medway in the North Atlantic, off the coast of Kingsale, Ireland.

Declared account drafts from the Exchequer Audit Office

This collection consists of drafts on paper, in file form, of declared accounts brought before the Audit Office of the Exchequer of Great Britain by other governmental departments. The accounts usually begin "The declaration of the account of X, Warden [etc.] of A...which said accountant doth yield and make his account...which said account was afterward declared before the Rt. Honble. [blank]..." These drafts appear to have originated from a single point, presumably the Audit Office.

Heraldic Prints from Joseph Edmondson's Baronagium Genealogicum

This collection consists of 27 copper-engraved heraldic prints from the six-volume work Baronagium Genealogicum by Joseph Edmonson, published in London from 1764-1784. The prints were collected by Margaret Hubbard Countryman, who may have bought them in Boston. Her daughter, Mary Louise Humphrey, donated them to the Kenneth Spencer Research Library.
