The collection primarily contains correspondence, legislation, and the like. Most of the correspondence deals with legislative matters and issues of concern to his constituency in the 44th District. There is also correspondence with state and national legislators, and with other political figures. And since the University of Kansas is part of the 44th District there is correspondence with university officials and students.

This collection consists of papers and news clippings on LGBT issues, both local and national, with a primary focus on diversity within schools and libraries. Materials from the late 1980s and early 1990s are mostly geographically focused on Queens, New York; materials from Lawrence, Kansas and the Kansas City metro area mostly date from the late 1990s and 2000s.

Overview Coffeyville, Kansas native Bruce A. McKinney began his career as an activist in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community during the 1960s while still a student in Coffeyville. During college, he was active in Wichita State University's Student Homophile Association.
