Hannah O. Leibengood papers

Overview These papers of lifelong Lawrence, Kansas resident Hannah O. Leibengood (1904-1993) include letters from her family and friends, as well as photographs and memorabilia. Also included are several journals of her grandfather, dentist Henry W. Howe (1842-1909), and many business records of her father, Loyd R. Howe (1869-1962), who operated a wallpapering, painting, and sign-making business in Lawrence for more than forty years.

Overview James H. Gower was an Iowa City, Iowa businessman and entrepreneur in Iowa's formative years of the 1840s. In 1874, he extended his business interests to Lawrence, Kansas--interests continued by his son-in-law, Justin DeWitt Bowersock. Included is an 1879 letter to Gower from his son Robert concerning his father's business affairs. The papers contain two Civil War letters from Gower's son James O. James Wright Johnston family papers

Overview James Wright Johnston, a Pennsylvania lawyer and banker, emigrated to Lawrence, Kansas in 1872, where he founded the State Bank of Lawrence, and was succeeded as bank president by his son, Robert Cromwell Johnston. These papers include biographical sketches of the father and son, correspondence and photographs of their Johnston family members of Lawrence, and family letters and career documents of J. W. Johnston's father, the Reverend Robert Johnston of Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

Lawrence Bank bank notes

Overview The collection contains four Lawrence Bank notes of three and five dollar denominations. These notes are imprinted with "The Lawrence Bank, Lawrence, Kansas" but were probably issued by the Lawrence National Bank, which was established in the 1860s. Imagery on the notes, which allowed the bearer to exchange the notes for cash, included a Native American woman holding a baby, a Native American man attacking a bison, and industrial scenes with a river barge prominent next to smoking factories.
