Biography

Bethel College, located in Newton, Harvey County, Kansas is a four-year private, primarily residential, liberal arts college. It is the oldest Mennonite college in North America. The charter for the college was signed on May 11, 1887 by the Newton community and the Kansas conference of Mennonites. Their goal was to establish a "nonsectarian but religious college." On October 12, 1888 2,500 people gathered to lay the cornerstone of what is today's Administration Building. Classes finally began on September 20, 1893.

Overview

This collection contains photographic negatives of people and buildings relating to Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. Most of the photographs were taken between approximately 1945 and 1955, but many are copies of older photographs, including cabinet cards. The negatives came in a numbered sequence, which has been retained.
