Overview

The verse, "A groan from the lobby of the Old Bailey", tells of the difficulty of dealing with the crowds and being allowed to enter the courtroom at the Old Bailey in London, England. Penciled notes on the leaf attribute the verse to Captain William Dawes Malton (flourished 1856-1884) and ascribe the occasion as the trial of Palmer. Malton, a military man and author, probably wrote this verse on the occasion of the trial of Samuel Palmer in May 1856.
