Biography

Franklin “Francis” Mason was born on September 23, 1835 to Sebra (Day) and Peter Mason, early settlers of Ohio, the 15th of their 17 children. Francis married Ellen Everett in Illinois in 1856. He fought in the 72nd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company E during the Civil War.

Francis and Ellen Mason moved to McCune Township in Crawford County, Kansas around 1864. The couple had three children: Ada L. (Foresman), John C., who died at the age of 17, and Frank E. Mason.

Francis passed away at his home July 23, 1918 at the age of 83. Ellen (Everett) Mason passed away on August 12, 1925 at the age of 89.

Overview

Franklin "Francis" Marion Mason moved to Kansas in 1863, building a homestead near McCune Township in Crawford County, Kansas. This collection consists of his diary providing a brief account of life on the farm from 1888-1904, documenting chores, weather, and other daily tasks in rural Crawford County. Loose items found in the diary have been stored separately.
