Overview Professor Backus joined the University of Kansas in 1950 where he served for twenty-two years. Professor Backus made substantial contributions to the Department of History, including many years of assistance in graduate advising, and was a leading organizer of the program of Slavic and Soviet Area Studies at the University of Kansas.
