The collector of this carte-de-viste album, Kansas City dermatologist Gordon C. Sauer, M.D., spent much of his life researching the 19th-century ornithologist John Gould. This carte-de-visite album contains 97 photographs of 19th-century naturalists, the majority of which have been identified. Among the notable portraits in the album are those of John Gould and Charles Darwin.
Preparatory manuscript artwork and separate lithographic prints for the bird books created by John Gould and the artists employed in his publication workshop in London, England, in the 19th century. Birds found in these books exist around the world, including in North and South America, Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and continental Europe, the Himalayan mountains, New Guinea, and Papua.
This collection consists primarily of dermatology journals and other related writings, correspondence with other medical professionals, and research performed by Dr. Sauer throughout his career as a student and medical professional.
