Biography

Helen Sheumaker (1966 - ), a native of Omaha, Nebraska received her BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Dr. Sheumaker is as of 2015 lecturer in American Studies at Miami University in Ohio, having held previous appointments at Miami and at Minnesota State University-Moorhead. Her research focuses on issues of consumerism in 19th and early 20th century United States. She is the author of Love Entwined: The Curious History of Human Hairwork (University of Pennsylvania Press) and is co-editor of American Material Culture: An Encyclopedia (ABC-CLIO). She has also authored several articles on material culture and narratives of collecting, as well as essays related to pedagogy and classroom techniques.
