Legislative bills files, 1975 - 1978

 Series
Call Number: RH MS 276

Scope and Contents

As legislative bills were written, changed, and passed by both houses of the legislature, they were sent to the governor's office for consideration. The governor received a report on more important or controversial bills from a staff member and perhaps from the agencies affected. Sometimes letters, cards and telegrams would come from constituents who expressed their opinion on the proposed bill.

Generally, each bill file contains one or more of these elements, as well as a copy of the bill, governor's notes, and a time schedule of how the bill progressed. The files for 1975-1976 are bulkier, with more reports and slip law copies attached. There are also bill sheets showing which ones were acted upon and how. Other files, such as correspondence, veto information, confirmations, etcetera, all of which relate to the legislative bills, are included at the end of each year.

By 1977-1978, much of this supplemental information was eliminated. The bills became more orderly and contain a modicum of information. The researcher is advised to check the general files under such subjects as legislature, vetoes, house, senate, and other titles related to his or her subject.
