Election files
Scope and Contents
The election files are divided into three periods generally: 1974 Gubernatorial election, 1976 Republican Governor's Conference in Wichita, and 1978 Gubernatorial election. The majority of material centers on the 1974 election, with correspondence filed by county of contributor, itineraries, policy statements, and speeches extant.
A large section dealing with expenditures and contribution-raising reveals lists by county, dates and alphabetical names of donators to the campaign. Distinctions in these lists are drawn between the August primary and November general election. Campaign expenditure reports to the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission for both Bennett and candidate Vern Miller are available.
A section of correspondence and expense material, including cancelled checks, for the Republican Governor's Conference in Wichita in 1976 is filed between elections. The last section is the 1978 election material, consisting of correspondence from the county chairmen with contributions received, a file on Democratic candidate John Carlin's voting record in the Kansas House of Representatives, and a file of county statistics and information. These information files are arragned alphabetically by county and capture the entire political, cultural, and economic status of every county in Kansas for the year 1978.
The 1978 election correspondence by county files previously mentioned lack 19 counties, beginning after Sedgwick County and running alphabetically. Whether they were lost or never created by the governor's staff is unknown. This series gives a good overview as to politics and political structure in Kansas in the mid-1970s.
