Papers of William Allen White, 1815 - 1945

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists chiefly of William Allen White's career correspondence, manuscripts, and manuscript-related correspondence, though the series also contains family correspondence. Included in the latter are William Allen White's more than 50 letters to his mother, dating from 1891 to 1920; his mother's letter to an acquaintance (bearing a lock of his hair), and condolences received on the death of his daughter Mary.

Also included are autobiographical sketches and documents detailing his White family ancestry. In the memorabilia is a first edition, inscribed by White, of the book Sunflowers, which he co-published in 1929.

Career correspondence, arranged alphabetically by surname, includes letters of substance from statesmen and writers, including Herbert Hoover, Alfred M. Landon, Wendell Willkie, and Edna Ferber. The subseries for White's writings contains his manuscripts of "In the Heart of a Fool, and A Puritan in Babylon," as well as the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Autobiography of William Allen White," edited and published posthumously by William Lindsay White. Also with White's writings are background letters solicited from personal associates of Woodrow Wilson, chiefly addressing Wilson's relationship with socialite Mary Allen Hulbert, whose letters to White are included.

"WAW" denotes William Allen White in the collection description.
