General

On January 14, Davis writes, 'find living alone rather dull...half inclined to take someone in with me...know I should get sick of them before a week had past.'

On January 17, he writes that he hung around his room all day, not having the courage to go anywhere.

On January 24, he writes that he is out of money and will have to leave his current boarding house in four days if he doesn't raise enough to pay board, 'am way down to the foot of the ladder, nothing left but starvation.' His grandmother gives him a five dollar bill to pay board.

On March 5, he mentions President Hayes, writing, 'Hayes sworn in president saturdy night. Done privately, a coward way of putting in a president.'

Starting in July, many of the pages in this volume are blank. His interest in keeping the diary seems to wane.
