 File — Folder: B:1

Scope and Contents

To: "Gentn." Describes the battle off Malaga (August 13, Old Style; Aug 24, New Style). Gives actions, statistics, ship names, and his own feelings.

[Admiral Sir George Rooke captured Gibraltar on August 9, New Style. The combined English and Dutch fleets tarried, hoping for a French reprisal. Admiral Toulouse brought out the French Mediterranean fleet against them--the only time during the War of the Spanish Succession that the two main battle fleets met. Destruction was heavy on both sides, but the French finally refused to re-engage, and from then on feared to cross the English Navy in the Mediterranean. This information based on Cambridge Modern History.]
