Scope and Contents

The volume begins with several letters, dated August 8, 1854-13 March 1855 and numbered 43-57, 56-63, written in the Black Sea (usually off Sebastopol or Balaclava).

Items numbered 64-72 regard recuperation of ship and man and are dated March 24 -June 5, 1855, written from Malta. There's also information regarding arrangements for returning home (50 leaves), dated June 30, 1855 and on the steamer Indiand or in Portsmouth.

Maps in the volume include a manuscript map by O'Hagan (26 x 21.5 cm on last leaf of scrapbook; "Plan of the Seat of War in the Crimea Sept 23rd 1854" Coast from Sebastopol to Eupatoria; military actions in red. "...in great haste..."); a lithographed colored cross-section (paper, 17.6 cm x ca 114 cm, Cape Loukoul to Kamiesh Bay; "Sevastopol East 2 miles ... From a sketch by Lieut. Mansell of H.M.S.V. Spitfire August 20, 1855"--shows forts, buildings, batteries, telegraphs. Scholarly: Admiralty?); a lithographed colored birds-eye view ("Panoramic view of the seat of war in Europe and Asia. Supplement to the Queen" June 9th 1877. J, S. Clay Del. et Lith."); and a map of the Black Sea and environs (41.3 x 53.5, mounted on cloth; lithographed black and white sketch-map pasted on inside of back cover and verso of last leaf; "Bombardement of Odessa the 22d April 1854. Published with the Daily Express." Bay, disposition of ships, batteries, etc of town. Paper 33.2 x 28.71m including key).

Pasted into the volume are several clippings from newspapers and from the Illustrated London News: on Hyde Parker's death, funeral, and character; on meritorious actions by O'Hagan; on life at Balaclava; and on the wounded refugee children cared for by Parker and O'Hagan.

Lastly, there is a manuscript quotation "Old Letters": on the pleasure of reading old letters. Dated September 19, 1884. Probably not Nannie's hand.
