Burton, Sir Frederick William, November 30, 1855

Item — Volume: 1, Page: inlaid opposite page 100

Scope and Contents

4-page letter (1 piece) to "my dear friend": Apologies for poor quality of sketches he's sending for "Madonna Pia"; defends buttoned elbows; veil vs mantle; "I got [the veil] from a moyen-age statue"; how is Martin?; production of "Tempest" in Munich; quarrel between Davison and Erich Devrient about "Hamlet." Signed: "with kind regards to Martin, FWB." Written from Munich, 48 Carlstrasse. The initials are not clear, but the B is definite. Boase and Boase Supp list a number of "painters" whose family names begin with B. Both Burton and Frederick Lee Bridell were in Munich at the proper time and were friends of Martin (T.M. signs the DNB article on Burton); however, the middle letter looks more like a W than an L, and the antiquarianism points to Burton. The recipient is not Martin, but is close to him: very likely his wife.
