Scope and Contents

Items of note, particularly engravings, have been marked by slips of paper in the volume and include

1. "The Tatler. Numb. 1 April 12. 1709." and all issues following through "Numb. 165 April 29. 1710." 1709-1710 ("Dr. Jonathan Swift. Mackenzie sc." Engraved oval portrait of Swift; precedes no.9).

2. "Mr. Steele. [engraved portrait] I. Thornhill pinxit. G. Vertue sculpsit. [London? 1713]" - mounted as frontispiece, 2 pages, folio. Printed folio title page for vol.l: "Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff Esq; ... London, Printed: And sold by John Morphew... MDCCX. ...," dedication "To Mr. Maynwaring."

3. "Edward Alleyn. [engraved portrait] Founder of Dulwich College...S Harding del. T Nugent sculp. Pub March 7, 1792, by E HardingFleet Street," 1792, follows no. 20.

4. "Memoirs of Edward Alleyn." p.[5]-6, follows no. 20. (This and the item above may be excised from F.G. Waldron's Biographical mirrour?) Also "The Right Reverend Bishop Atterbury. [engraved portrait] M, V. dr Gucht Sculp," follows no. 65; "The choice of Hercules. [engraving] Heath sculpt," follows no. 97; and "A faithful index of the dull as well as ingenious passages in 'the Tatlers. Vol. I," follows no. 114, as per instructions at foot of t-pof v.1; 2 printed leaves, paged "i-iv"; at foot of p.iv: "(The price of these two sheets, three pence.)"
