Scope and Contents
A report from the Deputy Surveyor of the Forest of Dean to the Commissioner of HM Woods, on his survey of the French State Forests made with 3 Crown Woodmen from Dean Forest and Highmeadow Woods. Describes present practices, some of which have survived several 150-year cycles. Recommends natural regeneration (although the immediate profits will be less) and French-type "High Forest" management for Dean Forest. Covers oak-beech, stool, and coniferous. Baylis died in 1907 aged 58 at Whitemead Park (see MS 147:11).
