Photographic images, circa 1900-2001
Scope and Contents
The collection's slides, some individually labeled by Duncan, are contained in 4 cubic foot boxes and are arranged alphabetically according to subjects by which Duncan herself arranged them. The photographic negatives (chiefly drawn from Duncan's slide collection) are housed separately, arranged alphabetically according to subjects by which the slides are arranged. The collection's prints range in size from 5x7 to 16x20 and include color, sepia-tone, and black and white prints. They are arranged by size and color, subarranged alphabetically by subject, utilizing the same subjects by which slides and negatives are arranged. At the beginning of the slides, negatives, and prints are publicity photographs of Duncan and her exhibitions, taken mostly by other photographers, and labeled "Biographical/Publicity." Following these are images from Duncan's own photography.
Some Duncan prints are signed and bear a specific identifying name and date. The name of a print which appears either on the print itself, or on a variant print of the same image, appears in quotations in the collection inventory. If prints from the same image bear differing names, a note identifying these variants is included. With prints from Duncan's photography are reproductions of many 19th century photographs of Native Americans by other photographers, as well as images of pioneers and their dwellings, sketches of buffalo herds, grasshopper plague cartoons, etc. Also included with Duncan's prints are several original photographs that date from 1900, as well as reproductions of Ise family photographs. Thirty of Duncan's color prints are shadow box mounted, arranged alphabetically by subject and located primarily in oversize boxes at RH MS-P 535(f); additional oversize photographs are located at RH MS-P 535(ff). Black and white and color print rolls of Duncan's "Konza Prairie" photomural are at RH MS 535-P Box 10.
