Personal papers, the bulk of the collection, include correspondence with family and friends, both incoming and outgoing; family genealogical information; notebooks and planners; and papers and other items related to specific family members.

Material in this series notably includes documents from Gardenhire's daughter Alissa, his parents, and his brother Shirley, as well as some information from Gardenhire's high school career and later reuntions at Topeka High.
