Scope and Contents
Most entries signed "W. H. Riggs, Hospital Steward, 17th Army Corps Hospital;" some signed "Warren H. Riggs;" some signed "Jon G Miller, Surg[eon] 11th Iowa Infantry in charge." One entry is signed, "Jon G Miller Surg 11 Iowa Ify in Charge of A.C.F. Hospl."
Volume lists 131 deaths in hospital, each with date of death, name, rank, regiment, list of belongings; most with home address; some with cause of death. Occasionally a note or receipt concerning disposition of the effects. Mostly private soldiers, some non-comissioned officers, a few officers, some Confederate soldiers, some servants. The list of effects is usally "Nothing" or a stereotyped list (knapsack, haversack, canteen, blanket woolen, blanket rubber); but some lists are detailed down to ambrotypes and change.
Chronologically arranged, numbered 1-129; 2 entries for "colored servants" at end of book.
Miller established the hospital at Marietta on July 16 and moved it to Atlanta on October 14, 1864.

Exercise book: brown marbled cardboard with brown diced leather spine. Label on cover reads "Effects of Deceased Soldiers;" each entry is headed "Hospital 17th A.C. Marietta Ga."
