Incoming correspondence, approximately 1873-1888
Scope and Contents
This series mostly consists of incoming correspondence from individuals regarding property they owned in Marion County, Kansas. Topics are typically buying or selling property and paying for the taxes owed through Case & Billings. Correspondents owning property in Marion County are located throughout the United States, some in Canada. There is some outgoing correspondence, but usually the correspondent has replied directly on the outgoing letter. There are also some notations and other documentation from Case & Billings related to the property being written about.
The correspondence is organized numerically from 1-1100 in a system devised by Case & Billings or their staff. The number relates to the parcel(s) of land as described in a legal description and section/township/range location, so multiple correspondents may be involved if the property has been bought and sold; multiple parcels of land are also typically associated with a single number. Some numbers appear to be missing, and occasionally Case & Billings staff cross-referenced to another number in their sequence.

Physical Description
Originally these loose items had been placed in three ledgers by Case & Billings or their employees. Items were overlaid on top of each other. Conservation staff at Spencer Research Library took apart these ledgers, and order has been maintained by number, but some items may not be correctly associated if they did not have a number written on them. Conservation staff did the best they could, but many of these items arrived torn or otherwise incomplete.
Many of these items continue to be fragile and should be handled with care.
