Scope and Contents

For this series (in most instances), the initial sketches and/or notes/research for an illustration can be found at MS 337. The final products or larger sketches for these initial research documents can be found at MS Q72 or MS Qa22. The reoccurrence of titles underneath a sub-series is not a duplicate entry, but indicates the physical separation of the materials outlined above.

Tyler’s process of designing drawings for posters and T-shirts for Liberty Graphics usually started out by working out ideas and sketches on copy and tracing paper in pencil. After the planning stages, Tyler would refine her drawings through intensive research.

Once the details of the overall drawing on tracing paper were planned out, the paper for the final drawing was taped on top of the tracing paper to begin the inking process. The specific drawing process utilized by Tyler was stippling — a process in which the details of a drawing is created strictly by small dots where the variation in the density of the dots create tonal value. Earlier drawings were made with crow quill pens dipped into India ink. Tyler switched to using technical pens, particularly ones produced by Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph, for better efficiency.

Once the ink drawing was completed, it was photocopied and Tyler added color using colored pencils. Liberty Graphics used the color drawing as a guide in order to figure out the color separation for the final product.

The range of works in this series brings to light Tyler's versatile process in creating drawings for Tyler Publishing (mainly posters), Liberty Graphics (t-shirts), and illustrations for magazines, publications, and stationary. Final products for many of these in-process materials can be found in the Printed Products seres.
