Magazines and Newspapers
Scope and Contents
This series includes materials related to illustrations Tyler created for a variety of magazines and newspapers, many of them based in Maine, as well as a few other types of publications.
Tyler’s job at the Maine Times involved a more varied approach in creating drawings compared to the respective processes involved in designing t-shirts or book illustrations. Drawings for newspapers required less research. For feature articles, Tyler was given more time to work on her drawings. The most creative latitude was allowed when creating house ads to encourage subscription and such duties as headline-making, layout, and ad creations.
Most of the drawings for the Maine Times were done directly on the layout pages that were printed for columns with non-photo blue with crow quill or other dip pens. Colors were occasionally used in the illustrations.
