Garden City, Changing Relations Project
Scope and Contents
Funded by a large grant from the Ford Foundation, the Changing Relations Project was a multi-city collaborative research effort into understanding ongoing changes in ethnic relations in several cities across the nation. Stull's team studied Garden City, Kansas, building on his previous experiences studying community health issues among the Papago Tribe of Tucson, Arizona, and the Mennonites of Kansas. Home to several very large meatpacking factories, the lessons of Garden City later became part of his research and advisory efforts elsewhere in the Midwest, including Lexington, Nebraska. His research methods included interviews with a wide range of community members, and transcripts of those conversations make up a large proportion of the materials in this series. The original audio tapes from those interviews are part of a separate series of audiovisual material.
