From Malin to her parents, 1941-1985, undated

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Jane Malin wrote home frequently to her parents on her travels and while studying and working in Texas and Oklahoma. The correspondence includes references to Malin's schooling; work environment; television programs; clothing and fashion; and current events nationally, in Kansas, and where she was residing at the time of writing (mostly Texas). She sent programs from operas, dramas, and musical events which she attended or in which she performed (often with inscribed or typed notes or reviews). She also clipped many news stories and humorous stories or comics from newspapers and included them in her correspondence.

Sometimes during procesing the envelope was found to contain only clippings and programs, no letter. Occassionally, her parents would send her a clipping with instructions to return it. Sometimes Malin would receive a letter from a friend and she would send it to her parents so that they could read it. Malin's mother was a stamp collector, so most of the correspondence had already been stripped of stamps and the cancellation mark prior to coming to Spencer Research Library.

Some of Malin's early correspondence is written in shorthand. The correspondence has been arranged chronologically by year in folders, but not necessarily by month or day. Newsclippings or other enclosures that came with the correspondence is in the same folder as the correspondence, often placed in archival enclosures.
