General

"Bronze ox on marble altar used in Imperial Sacrificial rites in Peking Temple of Heaven grounds by the Emperors in early spring to guarantee plenteous crops, and guard against demon-inspired untoward happenings as flood, late freeze, or drouth. Much more dignified procedure than the slaying of a live ox."
