Stereoview cards, bulk 1850s-1940s, 1966-2015

 Series
Call Number: RH PH 536

Scope and Contents

Each stereoview card has two images of the same scene, with a very slight difference. When viewed through a stereoviewer, the viewer's eyes will perceive the two photographic scenes as merged, and the image will appear to be 3-dimensional. However, many of the stereoviews were amateurly made and either the images were reversed, or the images were identical, resulting in either a blurred or flat image when viewed through a stereoviewer.

The stereoview series in the Hollmann collection is comprised of Kansas images, as well as views from Kansas City, Missouri, and Nebraska. The views cover many topics including agricultural scenes, animals and taxidermy exhibits, individuals and families, cities and street scenes, commerce, residences including sod houses, farms, schools and universities, industry, landscapes and geography, law, medicine, military, Native American cultures, recreation, churches, and other subjects. This series is described collectively by publisher; images are loose in boxes, with each "folder" being a section of the box that may contain many stereocards.

Researchers may request the use of the stereoviewer (see box 79) to view the images.

Arrangement

Leonard Hollmann kept detailed lists of his collection of stereoviews, organized by publishers' names. The stereoviews are arranged, based on his lists, alphabetically by publisher's name, with sub-series for Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri; 1903 flood views; Nebraska views; and other state views.

The stereoviews with no publisher identified are arranged alphabetically by city name under the appropriate state name.

Not every stereoview in the collection was on Hollmann's lists. It is possible that he did not keep the list updated the last few years of his life while he was still collecting. Those not on the list have been placed appropriately.
