 Series — Box: 1-3

Scope and Contents

The "Official communications" series consists of files compiled by Meyen and arranged both chronologically and in relation to the position that he held. The files include professional correspondence from his time as a graduate student and later Coordinator and Lecturer in the College of Education at the University of Iowa, as Public Instruction Coordinator at the Iowa State Department, as Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa, as Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri, as Professor and Chair of the Special Education Department at KU, as Associate Vice Chancellor, Dean of the School of Education, Professor of Special Education, and Executive Vice Chancellor of the Lawrence Campus at KU.

The last few files in the series include official reports regarding the development of facilities for people with disabilities in Iowa and the application of computer science to special education, as well as recommendations provided by an Iowa task force on special education regarding recreation, religion, welfare, employment, and education.

Also included at the beginning of this series is an "archive narrative" written by Meyen, in which he describes the entire collection's original housing and arrangement in addition to providing a detailed list of the collection's contents, placing them within the context of his career. This is accompanied by an extensive oral history transcript.
