Teacher training and teaching materials, 1962-2001 (bulk 1962-1979)
Scope and Contents
The "Teacher training and teaching materials" series includes materials both for teacher training as well as for teaching students with disabilities. Materials for teachers include training handbooks developed by the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction and the University of Iowa at the Special Education Curriculum Development Center. These manuals were designed to allow teachers to develop skills to effectively educate students with disabilities, and they are accompanied by handbooks on homemaking, sex education, arithmetic, reading comprehension, and reporting student progress. Also included is a grading system in various subjects specially designed for students with disabilities, and a printed version of the first module of the KU Online Academy's "Reading" training program for special education teachers. The Online Academy course can be accessed in its entirety in the Wayback Machine. Search onlineacademy.org/modules/a101/index.html.
Materials for students with disabilities include instruction manuals for and pictures of the Learner Managed Media Kit, an educational set dating from the 1970s designed to engage students with disabilities with various different types of media.
Also included are six sets of 8-inch floppy discs that form the Professional Vocabulary Series, a professional development program designed by Meyen that focuses on a standardized vocabulary for education professionals. The Spencer Research Library does not currently have the required technology to read these discs.
