Statements concerning textile trade, 1788
Scope and Contents
Statements forwarded to the Board of Control by the Court of Directors after a conference with the Delegates from the Cotton Wool Manufacturers, concerning limiting the importation of cotton goods from Bengal; with a covering letter from "Mr Smith" to Sir Joseph Banks. Consists of five items:
1. The Court of Directors have considered the 5 propositions which the Delegates laid before your Lordships, and have read their pamphlets; they disagree with the first 3 on restraint of Asian trade [gives details, statistics, suggestions, economic principles] but agree with the last 2: will be glad to import raw materials for the manufacturers.
2. "Statements to show the quantity exported of the Callicoes and Muslins imported from India" (covering the years 1784, 1786, 1787). Similar to item 1, docketed, pages [1-4] (2-4 blank).
3. "White Goods sold on Account of the Company" (covering the years 1765-1787); treats the effect of imports on the employment of weavers, etc., with statistics.
4. "Remarks on the observations of the Delegates of the Cotton Manufacturers respecting the balance resulting to England from the importation of Muslins and Callicoes." Also resembles item 1, bound in green tape, docketed, pages [1-12] (9-12 are blank). "The Delegates seem to have drawn very erroneous conclusions..." With statistics to show favorable balance of trade.
5. Letter to Sir Joseph Banks, Soho Square. Bloomsbury Square, May 30 [1788], one page with address, docketed. "Please return the paper respecting the Cotton Manufacturers; I must look at some possible errors in the statistics." With rough notes on amount of exports.
