Scope and Contents
Commonplace book on commerce, including a collection of 193 Company ordinances, statistics of trade and manufacture, political documents affecting trade, descriptions of manufacturing, handy lists. Added to irregularly. Perhaps compiled in the early 18th century by a member of the Company as a vade-mecum, or by a contemporary economist.
Provides notes on, abstracts of, and charts of import-export statistics, tariffs, laws, and treaties, particularly for England, France, and the Levant, dating from 1662-1719; Company ordinances, arranged by subject, dating from 1618-1687; Company charter, oaths; documents and laws concerning the Company; and foreign relations between Turkey, England, and the Levant Company, dating from 1606-1677; ships, fisheries, import-export information for several spots in the Americas, dating from 1714-1720; and handy charts of measures, money, fees, etc., essays on silk, wool, and other products and manufactures, some notes on 16th century economics, and other miscellaneous notes on commerce.

1 volume : Apparently a single informal 18th-century hand, probably the compiler's. Vellum binding, paper support. 1 watermark examined: Seven Provinces (17th-18th cents.) Some headings and side-notes very faint: probably originally in red.

Custodial History
The volume has an early 19th century armorial bookplate for "Ambrose Lisle Phillipps of Garendon," probably for Ambrose Lisle March-Phillipps de Lisle (1809-1878). Spencer Research Library acquired the volume in the Hoffman-Freeman "Consignment 1," item 2.
