Article of impeachment brought by Commons against Strafford, with his answers, and proofs for each article

 File — Folder: MS Q11:4
Call Number: MS Q11:4

Scope and Contents

Copy of charges, answers, and proofs in a case of impeachment for treason.

Each article is followed by the Earl's answer, and by the "proofs" which consist of brief statements (probably digests of depositions) concerning points in the article, with the name of the witness or document testifying thereto. Some proofs include statistics. The charges are in general that he acted unwisely as a public servant (for instance, one article is concerned with the tobacco-monopoly in-Ireland, and another with his reform of the flax industry); there are some charges that he used his army and his influence with the King to threaten the liberties of England.

Note: The text appears not to have reached its final form: see the foot of leaf 3: "q Whereas the Ea: sayth tht the Ea: off Cork had a p'don. Examine the Ea: off Cork to tht poynt." This may indicate that this text was a memorandum for one of the parties in the case.
