Biography of George William Frederick Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon (1800-1870)
Clarendon was an English diplomat from 1820-1830 before succeeding to the earldom. Thereafter he was a frequent figure in Whig and Liberal ministeries, serving as Foreign Secretary from 1853-1858, 1865-1866, and 1868-1870. He also served as lord lieutenant of Ireland during the Great Famine. He received the Garter in 1849.
