Trimble was a Confederate general in Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. Wounded in the leg, Trimble was unable to retreat and he was captured by the Union army. Trimble's letter is written 24 days after the battle. He reports on his progress, having had his leg amputated and fitted with a prosthetic.
