Maps
Scope and Contents
The maps, most of which regard Civil War military movements, are mostly from New York newspapers and are organized choronologically by date of newspaper. There is one item regarding the Franco-Pruissan War of 1870-1871.
Spencer Research Library's curator consulted David Bosse's Civil War Newspaper maps: a Cartobibliography of the Northern Daily Press (1993) and Civil War Newspaper Maps: A Historical Atlas (1993) when reviewing the maps in this collection. The finding aid notes where these maps appear in Bosse's works, or if they do not appear.
Some of the maps in the August 17, 1861 and the September 25, 1861 map supplements probably appeared earlier in regular issues of the paper. Type settings of map titles often differ when a map is reprinted. Since the Bosse Cartobibliography does not cover map supplements, it is not possible to be certain about re-use of maps in the supplements.
Measurements of the maps include the titles and are rounded up to the nearest cm. Measurements of bar scales are to the nearest mm.
