Hess was hired as a photographer for many weddings. Afterwards, Hess would show the "proofs" or unedited photographs to the newly wedded couple and they would order photographs from the proofs. Sometimes they would purchase the proofs, too. It is possible that in some cases, the wedding photographs represented in this collection may be the images not ordered or purchased by the customer.
