Scope and Contents
Includes photographs taken by Hess for businesses and other organizations, for individuals and families wanting portraits or passport pictures (including senior pictures), for artists and authors and musical groups, for local government and political candidates, for insurance companies needing evidence to support claims, and other commercial or freelance work conducted by Hess. Folder titles may include information about additional images found with those listed in Hess' original titles.

Arrangement
Many of Hess' commercial photographic material were in file folders and arranged alphabetically by Hess. There were several series of alphabetical file folders, indicating that Hess may have had several filing systems, possibly over time. During processing, all of the alphabetical files were consolidated into a single run to make the information more cohesive for the researcher.
In many cases, photographs and negatives were in the same folder. During processing, the photographs and negatives were separated, using Hess' original folder title on both, creating the two sub-series "Prints from alphabetical files," and "Negatives from alphabetical files." The separate "Negatives" sub-series is comprised of commercial negatives that were not in file folders, but apparently had originally been in alphabetical order.
