 File — Folder: A

Scope and Contents

The first item is a postcard from Shaw to R[obert] Farquharson Sharp, [1864-1945], dated February 24, 1903. Handwritten and signed, addressed from 10 Adelphi Terrace, W.C., the postcard is written to Farquharson at the British Museum Library and answers 3 questions on education, employment, and date of marriage. Incipit: "(i) I was not educated..." The postcard was mailed in Woking.

The second item is a handwritten letter, initialed (2 pages, 1 piece) from Shaw to L.W. [Lewis Wynne?] and dated November 1929. Topics include Shakespeare; a sense of humor inexplicably tied to an era; and "Shakespear's popularity...is in exact proportion to the modernity of his translators." Incipit: "I have never disparaged Shakespear..." Written on torn off last leaf of letter from L.W.: "P.S. I should be very glad of your permission to quote ... approval. L.W." [Information about the possible recipient: In 1965 Dan Laurence identified tentatively as "the journalist Lewis Wynne, with whom Shaw frequently corresponded at this period."]

The third item is another handwritten and signed postcard, sent to Stephen Henry Hobhouse [1881-1961] and dated December 7, 1934. Sent from Shaw's home in Ayot St Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts[fordshire]. Precis: Farlind, Broxbourne, Herts. We are going to South America; I'll read the book with Beatrice Webb; your book must have been troublesome since no man knows -&- anything about his mother. Incipit: "In January we are going..."

The last item in this folder is a handwritten and signed 1-page letter to [?] McNeal and dated December 10, 1946. Precis: Thanks for letting me see these most interesting old phonetic periodicals. Written on "From Bernard Shaw" note-paper, one of the items apparently accompanying this letter is located at folder C in this collection.
