Portraits and families, 1847 - 1990

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series comprises portraits of individuals and family groups, most of whom are identified. Many also include the names of photographers and studios. Includes prominent citizens of Lawrence and of Kansas, early settlers, Civil War soldiers and other figures from the "Bleeding Kansas" era, political figures, as well as unidentified portraits of individuals/groups who have been identified with Lawrence.

Included at the end of the "Photographic prints" sub-series is a further sub-series containing ambrotypes and daguerrotypes, some of which are extremely fragile. The majority of the ambrotypes and daguerrotypes have corresponding prints in the main "Photographic prints" sub-series; these prints should be used instead of the originals if at all possible.
