County Attorney, 1869 - 1980
Scope and Contents
The Douglas County Attorney is the chief legal officer for the county, elected every four years by the public. The County Attorney's office is responsible for prosecution of felonies, domestic violence misdemeanors, juvenile delinquency, and child protection; review of inheritance tax; and civil litigation on behalf of the county.
Prior to 1977, the County Attorney also oversaw the County Court, which handled small claims, traffic tickets, and limited civil cases. These matters now fall under the purview of the District Court.
