Custodial History
William P. Albrecht received the letter from Dr. O.K. Schram of the University of Edinburgh in March 1953.
General
Autograph letter, signed from Joseph Neuberg to Carlyle, 3 pages (1 sheet), regarding the Nicolai books sent through Carlyle's publishers that should have reached DR. Parthey by now, indicating that Neuberg cannot help and perhaps Abekan has kept them. Also discusses Carlyle's bust at Mr. Woolner's.
Carlyle forwarded the letter to Williams [Jn?], Esq., Hewiston Street and wrote on page 4 of the letter, "The foregoing letter shows that Mr Chapman [head of Chapman & Hall, Publishers] shouldl have sent the Nicolai books to Herr Abeken in Berlin 2 months ago; please take it up with him." Signature cut away from this last page, but "Rec'd 20 May 1865 T. Carlyle (Chelsea)" in Carlyle's hand written on page 1, and he annotated Neuberg's letter.
Note: Neuberg was a German admirer of Carlyle's who toured him through Germany in 1852 when he was gathering material for his biography of Frederick the Great, finished in 1865, and who generally acted as Carlyle's secretary.
