Letter to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, November 2, 1827

 File — Folder: 2

Dates

  • Creation: November 2, 1827

General

Written from St. Andrews, thanking the provost for the appointment to chair of theology in the University of Edinburgh. Chalmers also describes his difficulty with classes in moral philosophy and political economy at St. Andrews; St. Andrews allowed him to finish the term when he came to them from Glasgow 5 years prior. "Nobody can read my lectures--they being written either in Short-hand or in characters almost equally obscure. Whereas the theological class of Edinburgh was taught last year by deputation..." Chalmers states the offered salary is not sufficient to suport a professor's life but he will accept it; it is against his principles that Education and the Church should be low-paid.

Previously mounted on album leaf numbered 7 in pencil; envelope embossed "Edinb Life Assurance Comp 1823" previously stuck to page 1, now separated in same folder. Item had previously been tentatively identified as "Dr. Chelines."
