Children of the Comet was published posthumously by Open Road in 2015. The novel was originally conceived by Moffitt as "Rewinding the Universe" (and an even earlier working title, "After Eternity"), but his agent suggested that he tailor the novel to a young adult audience by making significant cuts to the manuscript, particularly the more scientific elements. Moffitt ultimately agreed to the cuts and eliminated several chapters, only to have the publisher, Open Road, request that some cut material be restored. Moffitt's manuscript collection includes many iterations of the novel over the course of this cutting and restoration process.
