Martin and Chubb family personal materials, 1860 - 1991

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Personal and family materials from the Martin and Chubb families. Includes some correspondence, report cards, photographs, news clippings, obituaries, cards, speeches, event programs, etc., much of it related to William (Bill) Woodrow Martin (1924-1991) and his wife Betty Louise (Chubb) Martin (1924-2009), who was the daughter of Rollin R. Chubb (1894-1977) and Julia Dent (Hanna) Chubb (1899-1983). Julia (Hanna) Chubb was the daughter of William K. Hanna (1861-1926) and Harriet (Fisk) Hanna (1868-1951); R.R. Chubb's parents were Supplee Henry Chubb (1859-1937) and Carrie E. (Goodell) Chubb (1863-1911). There are a significant number of family photos in this series from the Chubb side.

A notable portion of this material are the typed letter-diaries from Bill and Betty Martin to their children Greg, Janet (Martin) McKinney, Judy (Martin) Knoll, and Joyce, dating from 1973-1991. The Martins started the letter-diaries in 1973 in order to share news with all their family more easily. Spencer Research Library frequently has two sets of portions of these diaries, one of which appears to be the originals that Bill and Betty typed up and occasionally amended by hand, while another set appears to be the copy sent to one of their children. These sets do not always completely overlap; one set may be more complete than the other, and the set identified as "copy 1" is typically the set that appears to be the Martins' original version. Additionally, one set may have more or different copies of photographs, news articles, and other secondary items associated with it.

Topics in these letter-diaries include daily events, trips, the weather, quotations, reflecting on current events and news in the world, family events, copies of photographs and notes from previous years, copies of news articles of interest or pertinent to something the Martins are discussing in their diary-letter, etc. Some of the diaries were in reverse chronological order, but most were in chronological order, so Spencer staff rearranged to make the entire set chronological. Some items were out of order, and these have been placed back in order as much as possible.

Family members who donated this personal addition to the collection organized much of the material; Spencer Research staff have generally maintained this order unless it appeared unhelpful (for example, staff consolidated all of Bill Martin's report cards into a single folder instead of leaving them spread across several different folders). One large envelope of "Chubb misc." was broken up to separate out materials related to specific Hanna, Fisk, and Chubb family members. In all instances, photographs were foldered separated from textual materials.

The family used abbreviations for several family members, including WWM for Bill Martin, BLM for his wife Betty, CHM for Bill's father Charles Henry Martin (1885-1960), and EKM for Bill's mother Elizabeth Koontz Martin (1887-1972). These abbreviations have also been used in this finding aid.
