Field trips to Florida/Georgia and Hawaii, 1965 - 1999
Scope and Contents
Records related to spring break or summer field trips Roth led for his advanced placement (AP) biology students at Lawrence High School. The trips started in 1965 with annual visits to Florida and Georgia to study the ecological diversity of the southeastern United States. In 1976, Roth began leading student trips either over spring break or during the summer to the Big Island of Hawaii to study the human and natural history of Hawaii, with an emphasis on marine and terrestrial ecology. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, trips alternated each year to one location or the other.
Individual trip records may include itineraries, menus, travel logistics, student assignments and responsibilities during each trip, information about the areas they were visiting--both tourist information and scientific information about wildlife and ecology--costs of travel, photographs, field notes kept by Roth on the trip, news clippings about the students and trips, student evaluations (particularly when Roth began the Hawaii trips), handouts given to students, etc.
Most of the series is organized by location and chronologically. There is also some general reference material about Florida and Georgia or Hawaii, not related to any specific trip; these folders are at the end of each set of field trip records. The series also includes an article written by Stan and Janet Roth regarding these field trips and information about Lawrence High School's biology program--both dating from 1968--as well as information compiled about the field trips for historical purposes or because of alumni gatherings.
