General

In 1976, a gold-plated and engraved Winchester rifle was purchased by a Swiss antique dealer, inscribed "to Nehemiah Green from S.J.C., Wichita, Octr. 21, 1871, in friendship and gratitude." The rifle was brought to the attention of Robert Held of Acqvafresca Editrice S.A., Florence, Italy, who commissioned Crosswhite to research the history of the rifle and the two men involved in the exchange. This file includes Crosswhite's report, correspondence regarding Crosswhite's research, and photocopies of primary and secondary resources regarding the two former Kansas governors Nehemiah Green and Samuel J. Crawford, as well as information about Winchester rifles.
